Injectable medications may help some adults manage appetite, fullness, and health risks. They are one part of a medical plan—not a shortcut and not appropriate for everyone.

Eligible insured medical appointments may be covered by Alberta Health. Prescription medications are separate and may or may not be covered by a drug plan.
Meet the clinicHow injectable treatment is considered
A physician considers your health history, goals, weight-related complications, current medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding, gastrointestinal and endocrine history, cardiovascular risk, mental health, ability to follow up, affordability, and medication availability. Clinical appropriateness comes before prescribing.
Common medication categories
Semaglutide-based and tirzepatide-based treatments are prescription options that may be considered for chronic weight management when indicated. Other options may be appropriate depending on the clinical situation.
Brand, generic, indication, supply, pricing, and coverage can change. Your prescriber will discuss the option that is appropriate for you rather than selecting a medication based only on popularity.
What follow-up may include
Follow-up can review appetite, weight trend, nutrition, activity, gastrointestinal symptoms, hydration, mood, other medications, blood pressure, glucose when relevant, and whether the plan remains safe and useful. Dose changes are individualized.
Important safety points
Seek urgent medical advice for severe or persistent symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fainting, chest pain, or a serious allergic reaction. Do not start, stop, share, or change prescription medication without medical advice.
